PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN FOOD - 1979

Sponsored jointly by FAO and WHO

    EVALUATIONS 1979

    Joint meeting of the
FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues
    in Food and the Environment
    and the
WHO Expert Group on Pesticide Residues
    Geneva, 3-12 December 1979

    DDT

    Toxicology

    A conditional acceptable daily intake of 0 - 0.005 mg/kg bw was
established for DDT by the 1969 meeting. The present meeting was
provided with detailed data on a new carcinogenicity study and
summaries of several toxicity studies included in the WHO Criteria
    Document No. 9.

Additionally, the meeting was informed that there are important
uses of DDT in agriculture, mainly in tropical countries and that
under tropical conditions the degradation of DDT proceeds more
rapidly than was originally believed. This meeting recommends that
DDT should be re-evaluated by an early future meeting.
