Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives

PERMETHRIN
Chemical names: 3-PHENOXY (±) cis, trans 3-(2,2-DICHLOROVINYL)-2,2-DIMETHYLCYCLOPROPANE-1-CARBOXYLATE; 4-(PHENOXYPHENYL)-METHYL (±) cis, trans 3-(2,2-DICHLOROETHENENYL)-2,2-DIMETHYLCYCLOPROPANECARBOXYLATE
Functional class: VETERINARY DRUG (INSECTICIDE)
Latest evaluation: 2000
Comments/MRLs: An ADI of 0-50 mg/kg bw for technical grade permethrin with cis:trans ratios of 25:75 to 40:60 was established by the 1999 Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR; FAO Plant Production and Protection Paper 153, Rome, 2000). At its fifty-forth meeting (2000), the Committee was unable to establish an ADI for the 80:20 cis:trans isomeric mixture proposed for use as a veterinary drug because of the lack of information on toxicity. In the absence of an ADI, the Committee was unable to recommend MRLs for the 80:20 cis:trans isomeric mixture of permethrin.
Report: TRS 900-JECFA 54/52
