  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.  Risk of fire and explosion on contact with combustible substances or reducing agents.  NO contact with combustible substances or reducing agents.    Use water in large amounts.

 PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Cough. Sore throat. See Ingestion.  Use local exhaust or breathing protection.  Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness.  Protective gloves.  Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.
Eyes Redness. Pain.  Wear safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection if powder.  First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Diarrhoea. Drowsiness. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Vomiting. Deafness. Unconsciousness. See Effects of long-term or repeated exposure.  Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.  Rinse mouth. Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Refer for medical attention .

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Personal protection: particulate filter respirator adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. Sweep spilled substance into covered sealable containers. If appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

According to UN GHS Criteria

PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
COLOURLESS CRYSTALS.

Physical dangers

Chemical dangers
Decomposes on heating. This produces toxic and corrosive fumes including hydrogen bromide. The substance is a strong oxidant. It reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials, fuels, metal powder, grease and sulfur-containing compounds. This generates fire and explosion hazard.

Formula: NaBrO3
Molecular mass: 150.9
Decomposes at 381°C
Relative density (water = 1): 3.34
Solubility in water, g/100ml at 20°C: 36.4

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Ingestion could cause effects on the kidneys and nervous system. This may result in renal failure, respiratory depression, hearing loss and peripheral neuropathy. The effects may be delayed.

Inhalation risk
A harmful concentration of airborne particles can be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if powdered.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS

ENVIRONMENT

NOTES
Will turn shock-sensitive if contaminated with organic substances, metals and carbon.
Rinse contaminated clothing with plenty of water because of fire hazard.
