Search Basics

This help and Quick Reference Card to Verity will guide you in searching and using the powerful Verity Query Language to find the information you are looking for. The help guide starts with an overview of searching and moves from simple searches using a single word or phrase to more complicated searches using many search terms. Use the many examples as an aid to formulating your own searches.

Quick Tips

Here are some quick tips to get you started (click the underlined words to learn more):

shots/sea90000.gif  Enter your search terms in lower case.
  • The search engine will find both upper and lower case instances of your search term.
  • Mixed case is case-sensitive. For example, Programme finds Programme only and does not find programme.
  • Finds all word forms. For example, poison finds poisons, poisoned, poisonous, poisoning, etc.
shots/sea90000.gif  Search for phrases by entering the words separated by spaces.

  • Finds all the words and all forms of each word.
  • For example, circumstance of poisoning also finds circumstances of poisoning.
shots/sea90000.gif  Enclose phrases in double quotation marks to find the exact phrase.

  • For example, "bloody diarrhoea".
shots/sea90000.gif  Enclose chemical names in double quotation marks to find the exact substance.

  • For example, "1,1,1,-trichloroethane".
shots/sea90000.gif  Find multiple words by separating words with commas.
  • The search engine will find documents that contain any of your search terms. In addition, the more search terms that are present in the document, the higher the ranking.
  • For example, rash,headache,nausea.
shots/sea90000.gif  Expand your searches by using OR.
  • The search engine will find documents that contain at least one of your search terms.
  • For example, rash OR lesions.
shots/sea90000.gif  Narrow your searches by using AND.
  • The search engine will find documents that contain all of your search terms.
  • For example, rash AND vomiting.
shots/sea90000.gif  Exclude pages that are not relevant to your search by using NOT.

  • For example, vomit NOT blood.

Search hits are highlighted to help you easily identify and locate the search hits in the documents retrieved.

If the results list does not contain the information you are looking for, refine the query until you locate the document you need.

Tip

To quickly find your search hit or a string of characters within an open document:

- Click the Edit menu and Find (on This Page) or press Ctrl+F.
- Enter the characters to be found, e.g. "acute" and click Find Next.
