5. Summary of Data Reported and Evaluation

5.1 Animal data

meta-Phenylenediamine as a constituent of a hair-dye formulation was inadequately tested in mice by skin painting. meta-Phenylenediamine and its hydrochloride were inadequately tested in rats by subcutaneous injection. No evaluation of the carcinogenicity of this compound or of its hydrochloride can be made.

5.2 Human data

No case reports or epidemiological studies were available to the Working Group (see, however, 'General Remarks on the Substances Considered').
